Sex Education Statement
The Governors believe that it is part of the responsibility of the School to share with parents the preparation of children for adult life as well as ensuring that the children recognise the need to be, and to keep healthy.
We believe that Sexual Health Education has a significant role to play in equipping children for adult life alongside the other aspects of Personal and Social Education.
We recognise that it can be a very sensitive area and that all families have their own set of values and attitudes towards areas covered by Sexual Health Education. We therefore are committed to working in partnership with parents and always ensuring that parents are fully aware of the work the School is doing.
The School takes the view that a family is "a unit of people who are bound together through shared responsibilities". We believe that the most important aspect of sexual health is high self-esteem and this will be fostered at all times. We believe that it is essential to answer questions which children ask honestly and where possible factually.
Much of the work needed in order to help children become sexually healthy and mature adults will be covered under many different headings such as:
· people in my life and what I do for them
· caring for myself - hygiene, sleep, exercise, etc
· making decisions - influences on me
· expressing feelings and how to do this, being assertive - not aggressive.
Factual information about puberty and human reproduction will be given in Years 4, 5 and 6. Parents and carers will be given opportunities to see the materials which are being used and be informed of how and when the topics will be taught.
