Warren Primary School - Working in Partnership for Success

Assessment of Children

Children's progress is carefully monitored throughout their seven years with us. Teachers are using their professional judgements every moment they are with the children or marking their work. Teacher's assessments are regularly moderated against not only other teachers in this school but also colleagues in neighbouring schools.

In addition to the continuous formative assessments which help to inform teachers plan the next steps in your child's learning we also use a range of standardised tests which help to give a picture of the child against national standards.

Children in Reception are assessed using the National Profile.

Children have a reading assessment each half term where the targets and next steps for learning are carefully recorded.

Writing is assessed on a termly basis throughout the school and individual targets are set using this assessment.

Teachers assess maths progress and record attainment on a termly basis.

Children in Year Two take the assessment tests (SATs) in order that their teacher's assessments can be validated.

Children from Reception onwards take a reading test annually.

Children from Year One onwards are tested each half term on a set of words which they should be able to spell. Additionally children from Year Two onwards take a standardised spelling test twice per year.

Children in Years Three to Five take non-statutory tests each term. At the end of the year, children in Year Six take the Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs).

The progress of your child is reported to you from Year One through to Year Six through a written interim report in February and an end of year report in July. Children in Reception and Nursery receive a written end of year report.

We hold formal parent/carer/teacher consultations each term for all year groups, but you are welcome to discuss your child's progress at any time with either the class teacher or the Head Teacher. It is best that you do this at the end of the day when the teacher is not preparing to receive children.

Children who are not making satisfactory progress are carefully monitored and you will be informed and invited to a meeting to discuss the concern.
