Warren Primary School - Working in Partnership for Success

About the Hearing Impaired Resource

Warren Primary School is the designated school for primary aged deaf and hearing-impaired children who live in Thurrock. The deaf children who are included in the resource have a severe to profiund hearing loss.

There are two qualified Teachers of the Deaf and a number of learning support assistants who use British Sign Language to support the children's learning. We receive full support from a specialist speech and language therapist who works with the children on an individual basis. Other professionals such as the Educational Psychologist and Audiologist visit the children regularly to assist with assessment, advice and other practical support.

The school has two rooms that are specifically resources for the deaf children as well as part of the Nursery. In addition, there are several small rooms used for individual and quiet group work. Other features include flashing fire alarms, additional carpeting and soft furnishings, double-glazing and blinds, all of which improve the learning and safety environment for people with a hearing loss.

At Warren Primary School we offer a child-centred approach to communication. Our aim is to meet the varying needs of the deaf children in the school, recognising and using their linguistc strengths. The curriculum is delivered in the individual's preferred language whether that is British Sign Language (BSL), Signed Supported English (SSE) or Spoken English. We provide resources that enable deaf children to be included into mainstream classes whenever possible.
