Road Safety in the Curriculum
Philosophy Statement
Pupils need to acquire the skills, values and concepts to be able to assess and use the road environment safely. We encourage this by regular Walk to School campaigns and by promoting the use of the local supermarket car park. The responsibility for Road Safety Education is seen as a joint role between the school and parent or carer. The school has identified safe practices which will be carried out during all school activities and is working towards a structured plan to be included in the curriculum. All plans and procedures will be reviewed regularly. Back to top
School Transport and Trips
Risk assessments will be carried out in advance for all school trips be they on foot or using transport.Coaches with seat restraints are always used. There is a close liaison between school and the coach companies.
Parental permission forms are required to be signed by parents on the admission of the child to the school, giving the school permission to take children into the local community on pedestrian visits. Additional permission is sought where outings require transport.
All children are instructed about safe behaviour in cars and coaches before each school outing.
Children are assembled in a safe area and escorted by a teacher to the transport where they are supervised boarding and leaving the vehicle.
The number of pupils is checked before and after boarding.
A First Aid box is taken on all school trips.
Accompanying adults are informed of expected standards of behaviour by pupils and are instructed to ensure that this is being practised.
Arriving back at school, coaches leave the children on the correct side of the road adjacent to the footpath leading to the school.
Pedestrian journeys will be undertaken with due regard for Road Safety and time will be taken for instruction and safe routes. Back to top
Extra-Curricular Activities

Staff will have business cover.Parents will be notified in advance if their child is to travel in a private vehicle and will be asked to provide appropriate booster/child seat to comply with legislation. Parents are not allowed vehicular access to the school at the beginning and end of the school day.Parents are encouraged to come into the playground to leave and meet their children.
At the end of the day Foundation and Key Stage 1 children are assembled in class and collected by their parents.
All Key Stage 2 pupils are told to return to their classroom if whoever is collecting them has not arrived. Pupils and staff are aware of the procedures for late collection.
Pupils with medical appointments are collected from their classroom by a member of the office staff and escorted to the reception area to meet their parent or carer.
Parents have a duty to inform the school, in advance, when alternative arrangements are made for the collection of children. Back to top
