Physical Restraint Policy

Physical restraint is defined as the positive use of force in order to protect a child from hurting her or himself, others or seriously damaging property and at Warren it is used only as a last resort.

On the very rare occasions when there is no alternative only the minimum amount of force will be used and applied for the minimum possible time.

Where ever practical two adults will be present and at all times the children will be continuously offered the opportunity to regain self-control.

Physical restraint will never be used by an adult who is angry and due regard must always be given to the physical safety of the adult involved.

All incidents where physical control has been used will be recorded and the parents/carers will be informed as soon as possible after the event.

When restraining a child due regard will be given to gender or cultural differences.

Pupils will never under any circumstances be restrained by being tied or bound. Nor will any children be left alone in a locked room.

Where a child is known to have special needs, which require complex or repeated physical management, they should have a prescribed written handling policy that has been agreed by the parents/carers. Back to top
