Multicultural Policy

Philosophy Statement
At Warren we believe that multicultural education is concerned with more than the needs of pupils from ethnic backgrounds. It prepares all pupils for life in a world where they will meet, live and work alongside people of different cultures religions languages and ethnic origins. Back to top
Aims
- To acknowledge the diversity of the multicultural world we live in.

- To encourage and nurture respect for all human beings.

- To provide positive role models from a variety of cultures

- To acknowledge the contributions made to society by all cultures both historically and in the present time. Back to top
Learning Environment
Displays in the school should reflect our commitment to multicultural education. Staff should encourage members of our community to provide input into lessons and to be positive role models.

All staff should be aware of the dietary needs, dress requirements, religious beliefs and other languages spoken at home (including first language of individual pupils).
Staff should make appropriate provision for these to be accommodated, included into the curriculum, reflected in display and highlighted and celebrated with due sensitivity paid to the individual and their feelings.

There is zero tolerance for racist, sexist or religious comments that may cause offence. If these are made by children then they will be spoken to by a member of the senior teaching team and their parents may be informed. If a member of staff makes such a remark then disciplinary procedures may well be instigated.

Care must be taken to ensure that communication between home and school is equally welcoming and available to all parents and translators and interpreters should be used where possible. Back to top
Planning
Planning for multicultural education is planned for within the topic grids.
Multicultural week provides an additional planned opportunity to celebrate cultures represented within Warren and the United Kingdom. Back to top
Resources
All staff should be vigilant to ensure that resources used in school do not contain racist, sexist or stereotypical material. Care should be taken when ordering resources that these reflect not just the ethnic groups represented in the school but attempt to reflect the social and ethnic mix of the United Kingdom as a whole. Adults are the most important resource in the school and racist, sexist and stereotypical statements should be challenged and/or reported. Back to top
Monitoring and Assessment
Plans will be scrutinised at the monitoring meetings for the multicultural elements.
The Multicultural co-ordinator has responsibility for ensuring that all pupils from ethnic backgrounds, including those who have English as an additional language are monitored regularly to ensure that their needs are being met particularly in relation to academic achievement. All co-ordinators have a duty to ensure that their subject areas have multicultural dimensions. The Governor with responsibility for Multicultural Education will meet with the co-ordinator on a regular basis to monitor the work of the school. Back to top
