Gifted and Talented Policy
Philosophy Statement
At Warren we recognise that some children may have talent and gifts, which are beyond the normal age, related expectations and we believe that provision must be made for them in order that not only can they pursue their gift or talent but also continue to develop as a rounded, well adjusted individual. We acknowledge that these talents or gifts may cover one or more of the following areas and may occur singly or in combination: physical, expressive arts, general intellectual ability, specific subject ability, technical ability, leadership qualities, social skills or creative abilities. Aims
It is our intention that all the children are regarded as individuals with equal rights to a broad and balanced curriculum and therefore any additional help will take this into consideration. It is our intention that all children will achieve the highest possible standards in all their endeavours. As a school we aim to develop an ethos, which nurtures success and values achievement in all areas of life.
We aim to provide children with access to specialist teachers wherever possible to ensure that their needs are being met. Back to top
Planning
All teachers will have as an entitlement a termly meeting with the Gifted and Talented Co-coordinator to discuss the children in their class and identify any who meet the schools criteria for inclusion on the gifted and talented register. We must be clear as to the definitions of talented, gifted and able pupils. The criteria for inclusion on the Gifted and Talented register will be:
- Where a child is performing significantly above the level expected in one or more subjects. This will equate to the number of points expected for their achievement during the year.
- Where a child has been identified by an outside agency.
All schemes of work should identify extension and enrichment activities and opportunities for independent learning and problem solving skills to take place.
Children will generally work in groups of like ability. Grouping and setting, across the school will be flexible enough to allow children the opportunity to excel. This will allow gifted children to work within an appropriate set regardless of their chronological year group. Back to top
